Under section 9.2 of the ISO 9001 standard an organization must conduct internal audits to provide information on whether the organization conforms:
- To its own requirements of its quality management system.
- The requirements of ISO 9001 standard and whether the system is effectively implemented and maintained.
Internal audits should be conducted at planned intervals to determine the status and importance of each process that comprises of the quality management system.
The internal audit frequency should be based upon process performance trends, results from previous audits, levels of customer satisfaction, rates of non-conformity and corrective actions. This can ensure that the organization focuses on the aspects that affect product and process conformity, and design and development the most.
Once completed an internal audit report can also serve as ‘retained documented information’ as evidence of effective implementation of an audit program.
