A barricade is a physical barrier erected to prevent personnel from being exposed to hazards. It can be solid, hard, or soft as described below.

Hard barricading is a barricade constructed of scaffold tubes or other materials (metal, timber) that are not flexible.

Soft barricading is a barricade constructed of plastic tape, chain, etc, suspended from stands or fixed to structures.

Solid barricading is a barricade constructed of a material and erected so that it cannot be readily crossed (i.e. webbing or meshed plastic). For example a fence, temporary fence panels or water barriers.

The selection of the signage required should be determined through risk assessment and an auditing process. In a workplace the following types of areas will generally require signage:

  • Hazardous substances and dangerous goods storage areas.
  • Pedestrian and traffic management.
  • Construction and maintenance work areas (at entry and onsite).
  • Areas where specific PPE is required.
  • Emergency exits.
  • Emergency equipment within buildings and structures.
  • Electrical and mechanical hazardous areas.
  • Confined spaces.
  • Hazardous area zones.
  • Toxic management zones.
  • Utility services (e.g. electrical, gas, water, etc).

Hazard information boards and/or information tags (attached to barriers in predominant positions) are a useful method of advising persons about hazards associated within barricaded areas.

Note: The signage for a hazardous area should:

  • Identify the nature of the hazardous area (e.g. gas or dust hazardous area), and
  • Specify requirements and precautions whilst in the hazardous area (e.g. signage is to identify equipment that is not permitted in the hazardous area).
