What is a Permit Procedure?

A permit procedure is a written document that is used to ensure that all required permits are completed correctly before work commences. The intent of a permit procedure is to define the minimum requirements to ensure that permits for designated high-risk works are completed and the work performed under safe, controlled and documented conditions.

Completing a Permit

When completing the permit process an assessment should be undertaken by a manager, supervisor or other authorized person.   • The permit holder needs to monitor the permitted work in accordance with the scope of work and the agreed control measures with the understanding that should any conditions change or any unexpected hazards or risks be identified that work must be stopped and re-assessed.
  • Any changes that affect the validity of a permit should result in the immediate cancelation of the current permit. A new permit should be issued for the work in this circumstance.
  • If permit requirements require the transfer from one permit holder to another, all required signatures on the transferring the permit section need to be completed.

Permit authorizers must ensure by inspection that all works associated with the permit have been completed correctly and that the work area has been reinstated too safe.
