Description

What is a Chemical Assessment?

A chemical assessment is a questionnaire that can be used to evaluate a person’s general understanding and knowledge of the potential hazards posed by chemicals. It is generally conducted after chemical safety training has been presented. The goal of a chemical assessment is to ensure workers have a good enough understanding of the risks posed by chemicals and can work safely when using the chemicals.

Chemical Safety Training

We all know that chemicals can be dangerous but, did you know that just coming into contact with some chemicals can cause serious health problems? That’s why chemical safety training is so important. There are many different chemicals used in a variety of industries, and each one can have its own unique risks and hazards. Some chemicals are corrosive and can cause burns, while others are poisonous if inhaled or ingested. Without proper training, workers may not be aware of the dangers of the chemicals they are using. They may also not know how to properly handle and store these chemicals. This can lead to accidents, injuries, and even death. Chemical safety training teaches workers about the specific dangers of the chemicals they are using.

How to Use Chemicals Safely

When using hazardous chemicals these general safety guidelines should be followed:

  • The safety data sheet (SDS) information must be reflected in chemical risk assessments.
  • A chemical brought into the workplace for the first time must be accompanied by a safety data sheet.
  • Personnel using the chemicals need to have the necessary training and competencies to enable safe use.
  • Whenever a hazardous chemical is used, it must be in accordance with the SDS, the label and any other relevant instructions.
  • All chemicals must be recorded in a chemical register.
  • Appropriate signage must be displayed (where necessary) to alert and warn of hazardous chemicals and their risks.
  • A supply of eyewash needs to be near the location where chemicals are used.
  • A spill kit must be available if there is a risk of a chemical spill, or decanting takes place at the workplace.
  • All hazardous chemicals or dangerous goods no longer required must be disposed of in accordance with the provisions outlined in the safety data sheet.
