About this Ladder Inspection Checklist

This ladder inspection checklist can be used to record ladder safety inspections at your workplace. The checklist can record up to five individual ladders and includes an image identifying the basic components of a ladder and the labeling requirements.

As falls from ladders contribute to a significant number of incidents every year, particularly in the construction and trade services industries, the safe use of a ladder is extremely important and the condition of a ladder should never be overlooked.

Ladders must be regularly inspected by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

General Requirements for Working on Ladders

Ladders should only be used to work at heights when it is not reasonably practicable to use a higher-level control measure. If ladders are to be used, they must be selected to suit the task and consideration must be given to the duration of the task, the physical surroundings and the prevailing weather conditions.

The following are requirements that relate to the safe use of portable ladders and must be adhered to:

  • The ladder must be manufactured for industrial use.
  • The ladder must be set up on firm, stable and level ground.
  • The ladder must only be used for that which it was designed.
  • The ladder must be checked before use to ensure that it is in good condition.
  • All the locking devices on the ladder must be in place.
  • The worker’s body must remain within the space between the sides of the ladder while performing work.
  • Three points of substantial contact must always be maintained while performing work on a ladder.

Ladder Inspections and Maintenance

Ladders must be regularly inspected by a competent person in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Ladders with any of the following faults must be replaced or repaired:

  • Fibreglass stiles cracked, chipped or severely faded with fibers exposed.
  •  Timber stiles warped, splintered, cracked or bruised.
  • Metal stiles twisted, bent, kinked, crushed or with cracked welds or damaged feet.
  • Rungs, steps, treads, or top plates are missing.
  • Worn, damaged, or loose tie rods.
  • Missing, broken or loose ropes, braces, or brackets.
  • Timber members that are covered with opaque paint or other treatment that could disguise faults in the timber.
  • Missing, loose, bent, or worn fasteners, i.e. rivets, bolts, and pins worn or damaged feet, including worn non-slip material.

Stepladder Safe Use

When using a stepladder to perform work the following must be adhered to:

  • It shall only be used in the fully open and locked position.
  • It must be manufactured of a non-conductive material if used to perform electrical work.
